Dressing for Garba abroad looks different than back home — here's what actually works for smaller community halls and unpredictable September weather.
Start with the kediyu — but know when to skip it
The flared kediyu jacket over a fitted kurta is the outfit most people picture when they think of men's Garba wear, and for good reason: it moves well, photographs even better, and instantly reads as festive. If you're going to one big event and want to look the part in every photo, this is still the right call.
But it's also the warmest option on this list. If you're dancing raas for three or four hours in a packed community hall with the AC struggling to keep up, a heavier kediyu over a full kurta can get uncomfortable fast. If comfort matters more to you than the classic silhouette, a well-embroidered kurta set on its own — no jacket — gives you almost the same festive presence with a lot more room to move.
Layer for a September that isn't Gujarat
Navratri in Ahmedabad means dry heat well into the evening. Navratri in Houston, Toronto, or New Jersey means a warm afternoon that can drop ten or fifteen degrees by the time raas actually gets going after dinner and garba-round formalities. Dressing for the walk from the parking lot matters as much as dressing for the dance floor.
The easiest fix is a layer you can add or lose without changing your whole outfit: a plain shawl or an unstructured jacket in a coordinating color works over most kurta sets, and it comes off the second the music starts and the hall fills up with people.
Footwear that survives four hours of raas
Traditional mojari look great standing still and terrible after two hours of continuous dandiya — they're flat, stiff-soled, and not built for repetitive footwork. If your event is genuinely high-energy, cushioned juttis or even clean sneakers under a longer kurta will save your feet and nobody will notice under the movement.
